While cost may seem like the most important factor when considering what commercial refrigerator your business should purchase, it should not be the only thing you take into account. The price is something you pay upfront, but the long-term cost of maintenance and energy consumption is crucial and has far-reaching consequences. That’s where Energy Star comes in. But what makes Energy Star products different from all the rest?
What Makes Energy Star Products Different?
The Long Run
Even if your cooling system has a low purchase price, it may use a large amount of energy each month and significantly increase your utility bills. Paying more initially but saving money on energy costs monthly will save you money in the long run. That is why many in the food service industry leaders prefer to utilize Energy Star products.
EPA Rating
Energy Star is a rating created by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that applies to a wide range of commercial and household appliances, including cooking and heating equipment, refrigerators, televisions and other electronic devices. Energy Star products are easily identifiable by the Energy Star logo on their packaging.
The EPA takes Energy Star ratings seriously and only allows products to receive the label if they meet certain requirements. For a commercial refrigerator, the following criteria must be met:
1. The unit demonstrates the ability to save significantly more energy in comparison to average units in its class.
2. Regardless of its energy savings, the product also needs to perform as well as other, less-energy efficient products in its class.
3. The price of Energy Star rated appliances can be significantly higher than other comparable products. However, the difference in initial cost is generally balanced over the next few months based on utility bills.
The Difference
Rigorous testing and guidelines is what makes Energy Star products different from the rest. When you buy one, you know that your unit works just as well or better than other models in its class. On average, an Energy Star appliance uses 40 percent less energy. This can translate into hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings over time.
